Harbour to Headwaters

Barravore

Migratory fish such as Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout, Lamprey, and European Eels encounter numerous instream barriers in the Avoca River Catchment. In fact, approximately 50% of the entire catchment is impaired or blocked to fish passage.

East Wicklow Rivers Trust are working with the relevant agencies to remove or mitigate such barriers across Co. Wicklow for better habitat connectivity in our rivers.

Barravore

Heritage Information

The great valley of Glenmalure was scraped out by ice quite a few millennia ago and is now the source of the beautiful Avonbeg River. This valley was once a hive of industry with several lead mines in operation. The remains of houses and operational structures can be seen dotted along the lower slopes. Barravore is a popular starting point for the climb to the summit of Wicklow’s highest mountain.

Feature Creature: Fraochán

Fraochán Biodiversity Species Profile

Frochán (bilberries) are a deciduous low growing undershrub that are found mostly on acid heathland and damp slopes in the Wicklow Uplands. Their native habitat can come under pressure from changes in land management or conversion to commercial spruce forestry. The fruit of the Frochán is edible and is rich in Vitamin C. They were traditionally gathered on the last Sunday in July, known as ‘Frochán Sunday’.
