Harbour to Headwaters

Aghavannagh

Ecology Notes

Aghavannagh is set in the beautiful Ow River valley with the Ow headwaters originating from the southern side of Lugnaquilla Mountain, the highest mountain peak in Leinster.

The River Ow is used recreationally for fishing and kayaking when in flood.

Heritage Information

Aghavannagh, or Achadh Mheánach, meaning ‘hilly field’, is situated in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains. In 1803 an army barracks was built locally as part of the Military Road, which stretches from Rathfarnham in Dublin to here in Aghavannagh.

Feature Creature: Daubenton’s Bat

Daubenton’s Bat is often called the ‘water bat’ as it skims over waterbodies like a hovercraft is search of its food (caddisflies, mayflies, and midges).

The Daubenton’s bat can even swim if it makes a mistake and ends up in the water!
