Glenmacnass Waterfall

Ecology Notes

Good water quality is essential for aquatic biodiversity such as macroinvertebrates (Mayfly, Stonefly and Caddisfly) among others on which Dippers and fish rely on as a food source.

Water quality status maps along the catchment can be viewed at www.catchments.ie.

Heritage Information

The Wicklow Military Road was built over 200 years ago stretching from Rathfarnham in South County Dublin to Aghavannagh in the heart of the Wicklow Hills. Its 60km length is an ideal way to experience this most varied and beautiful county.

The road was built by the British military between 1803 and 1809 to eradicate the last vestiges of Irish resistance to British rule in Ireland.

Feature Creature: Irish Dipper

The Irish Dipper is a unique bird found only in Ireland. They live along fast flowing clean rivers, often in upland areas and are extremely sensitive to changes in water quality. They can move about underwater using their wings to ‘swim’ and source their food from the riverbed, such as Caddisfly, Mayfly and Stonefly.
