Harbour to Headwaters

Trooperstown

Ecology Notes

The quality of the river environment is so important to the wellbeing and survival of fish species and other aquatic life.

The riparian habitats along our riverbanks provide shade and shelter, food for fish and provide stability of riverbanks reducing riverbank erosion. Excessive bank erosion can cause siltation of the riverbed, which impacts the river ecosystem.

Heritage Information

Trooperstown townland is so named because it is said that British troops camped here during the 1798 rebellion. The old bridge here had to be replaced after “Hurricane Charlie” swept away the old bridge in 1986.

The carpark surroundings are a Native Woodland Scheme site and replanted with primarily Oak with Alder and Birch in pockets.

Feature Creature: Great Spotted Woodpecker

The Great Spotted Woodpecker has recently returned to woodlands of Co. Wicklow after being extinct in Ireland for well over a century!

Although still scarce and rarely seen, it can often be heard by a very distinctive drumming sound it makes against trees.
